Elder Care Facilities

The facility chosen to care for a beloved elderly parent or relative will depend on the level of care the patient needs. For example, when my mother first came to live with me, she was mostly still self-sufficient; but she was forgetful, and it wasn't safe for her to live alone. The problem was that I had a full-time job. I located an adult day-care facility between my home and my job where I could take my mother to spend the hours when I was working. Actually, she loved it. She made friends with people of her own age. A healthy lunch was provided, and she had a little spot of her own where she could nap if she wanted to. The arrangement was perfect for a long time.

When both spouses have retired from the jobs that they have worked at most of their adult lives and the "chicks" have all been educated and have flown the coop, so to speak, many people begin to consider the...
On the other hand, when an elderly parent or a relative reaches the point where they require physical help with dressing, bathing, going to the bathroom, etc., that level of care cannot be provided at an adult day-care facility, and it can't be provided in the home unless you can afford to hire around-the-clock nursing care. The elderly parent or relative needs to become a resident in a retirement home or nursing home (again, depending upon the level of care needed).
Research the options available in the area where you live. In most areas there are many different options available. Some nursing homes as well as retirement homes are privately owned and do not accept patients whose care is government provided. Others accept both privately paid as well as government-paid residents. If your parent or relative has an extended care insurance policy, they will be considered a private-paid patient. There are many financial considerations, and care in a residential care facility doesn't come cheap.
